Super Bowl
The Super Bowl is the championship game in the National Football League, the
most important American professional football competition in the United
States, and therefore the world. The Super Bowl is often considered the
premier annually held sporting event in the United States. The event is held
on Super Bowl Sunday.
The Super Bowl was first played in January 1967 between the champions of the
American Football League and the National Football League. Prior to 1967,
the two leagues determined separate champions, in the National Football
League Championship and the American Football League Championship. Since
1970, the Super Bowl has featured the champions of the American Football
Conference and the National Football Conference, under the aegis of the NFL.
Following Apple Computer's 1984 advertisement announcing the Apple Macintosh
computer, directed by Ridley Scott, the broadcast of the Super Bowl became
the premier spot for high-concept or simply extravagantly expensive
commercials. Famous commercial campaigns include the Budweiser "Bud Bowl"
campaign, and the 1999 and 2000 dot-com ads.
